Dance Weekends

Dance weekends are not a major part of contra dance culture in the northeast, but seem to be much more central elsewhere. Playing in Knoxville the flyers table was full of weekends, several a month. Each local dance seemed to also organize an annual weekend. How did this come about? What makes the northeast different here?
